This recipe is near and dear to my heart. 🥰
When I wrote A Cup of Holiday Fear, I new that Torte would without a doubt feature traditional Christmas stollen on their special holiday menu. When I was growing up my mom would bake stollen for neighbor gifts and our Christmas breakfast. I took her original recipe and made a few tweaks, opting for a slightly softer dough and a layer of melted chocolate. If you’ve never made a stollen, this is the recipe for you! 😋

Christmas Stollen from A Cup of Holiday Fear
Ingredients:
2 packages of yeast
½ cup warm water
1 tsp sugar
1 cup milk
½ cup butter
½ cup sugar
1 tsp salt
4 – 4 ½ cups flour
2 tsps cardamom
For the filling:
1 cup walnuts (finely chopped)
1 tsp cardamom
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp ginger
½ tsp nutmeg
½ tsp cloves
½ tsp salt
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp lemon juice and zest
1 tbsp orange juice and zest
1 tbsp white rum
1 tbsp brandy
4 ounces melted semi-sweet baking chocolate
For the glaze:
1 cup powdered sugar
Zest and juice of one small orange
Holiday sprinkles
Directions:
Preheat oven to proof setting.
Mix yeast with one tsp sugar and warm water. Let rise for five minutes. Melt butter in hot milk and set to the side. In a mixer use dough hook and combine sugar, salt, flour and cardamom. Add milk and the yeast mixture and combine on medium until a dough forms. Proof for 30 minutes or until dough doubles in size.
Place all filling ingredients in blender and pulse until well-mixed and walnuts have been finely chopped.
Shape dough into two balls. Roll each into an oval. Spread on a thin layer of melted chocolate, followed by half of the filling, then fold sides together and pinch ends. Repeat for second loaf. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Proof for another 30 minutes. Then bake at 375° F for 20-25 minutes or until light golden brown. Drizzle with glaze and decorate with holiday sprinkles.
